“A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.” Proverbs 22:3
It is both a great time and a challenging time to be a musician in 2018. Musicians can get their music out to more people than ever before in the history of the world. But most people expect to be able to get it for free, or really close to it. Think about it: when you want to show someone a song you like, you go to YouTube to show them, right?
That’s exactly what I do! This is great news for distribution of music and the gospel message. But it also means we have to change our strategy for funding music ministry if we want to continue in the years to come.
While people are still purchasing our physical CDs, I don’t expect that to last forever. A lot of people think we can make thousands of dollars on YouTube. The reality is that with over 2 million views, we’ve brought in $119.18 total through YouTube since 2012.
That’s okay. I’m not on YouTube for the money; I’m on YouTube for the ministry. Personally, I don’t think we will ever get big enough for YouTube to make a significant financial difference for us. And that’s okay.
(It is the same basic principle across all digital streaming media. In case you are interested, when someone streams one of our songs on Pandora, we receive $.00014.)
Thousands of digital creators have realized this changing landscape in music, art, video, photography, and other areas. While the top artists who pull in millions of streams each month certainly see a financial benefit, most will never reach that tier.
With my conservative brand of Christian music, I don’t expect to ever become popular like that. And I never want to become a slave to chasing what is trendy.
What creators are doing is asking people who believe in what they do to support their work directly through online portals like PATREON.
We decided to do the same beginning in October of 2016. We didn’t talk about it as much as we could have, but God still gave us an average of 115 Patrons on our PATREON page who supported us throughout 2017. From a human perspective, it would have been very difficult to survive everything that happened last year without those people.
You can become a Patron for as little as $1 per video. Click the button below to see how it works.
I am prayerfully setting a goal of 250 Patrons by December 31. I believe that this is the future of music ministry. This is what will allow us to continue to create godly music that encourages people. Even if you cannot become a Patron this month, would you pray with us toward this goal?
When I say that I can see the future, I don’t mean that I’m a prophet who literally sees the future. But I want to be like the prudent man in Proverbs 22 who can see what’s coming up the road and prepares for it, instead of getting caught by surprise unprepared.
